Ōkami 2 Confirmed to Be a Direct Sequel, Still in Early Development

The long-awaited sequel to the beloved adventure game, Ōkami, announced at last year's Game Awards, has finally received some clarification. While details remain scarce, IGN's recent interview with the project leads revealed crucial information. The sequel is, in fact, a direct continuation of the original Ōkami's storyline.

Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi confirmed the sequel's narrative connection to the first game. Director Hideki Kamiya playfully hinted at Amaterasu's return, prompting Hirabayashi's confirmation of the sun goddess's presence in the TGA trailer.

While this confirms fan expectations, the team addressed the existing Ōkamiden, a Nintendo DS title starring Amaterasu's child, Chibiterasu. Hirabayashi acknowledged mixed player reception to Ōkamiden, citing both its platform and the absence of key original team members as contributing factors. He emphasized that the new sequel directly follows the original Ōkami's narrative.

The original Ōkami's ending provides a natural springboard for a sequel, leaving Amaterasu and another character embarking on an unexplored journey, ripe with potential conflicts and challenges.
