Digital Revolutionizing Devarattam: A Mobile App Tribute
This application, a product of my "Digital Revolution of Devarattam" project, is dedicated to the esteemed figures who have shaped Devarattam: Kalaimamani Mr. M. Kumararaman (retired teacher), Kalaimani Mr. M. Kannan Kumar, and Kalaimani Mr. K. Nellai Manikandan from Zamin Kodangipatti—recipients of the Kalaimani, Kalaimani, and Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar awards, respectively. My gratitude also extends to my Guru, Mr. E. Rajakamulu, and the beloved legends of Devarattam.
The primary purpose of this app is to promote Devarattam and celebrate its accomplished artists. The app features detailed information about the dance form and its notable practitioners.
Devarattam, a traditional folk dance of Tamil Nadu, boasts a rich history. Performed for generations by the Rajakambalathu Nayakkar community, both historically and in the present day, it comprises a foundation of 32 basic steps, with variations expanding the repertoire to 72 steps.
Devarattam dancers are easily recognized by their distinctive attire: they gracefully perform the dance while holding handkerchiefs in each hand, adorned with salangai (ankle bells), and accompanying themselves with the Deva Thunthumi, a traditional musical instrument.
