Home > News > Unannounced Super Mario Bros. Movie Sequel Title 'Super Mario World' Published Then Pulled From NBCUniversal Press Release
It seems we may have an early hint at the title of the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie thanks to a premature reveal in an NBCUniversal press release. The document, which was intended to highlight upcoming content for their Upfront Showcase, inadvertently mentioned Super Mario World as one of the future releases from Universal Pictures and Illumination, destined for their streaming platform, Peacock.
Quickly after the initial publication, the internet caught wind of this slip-up, and Universal promptly revised the press release to scrub all references to Mario. This incident was captured and shared across social media platforms, with notable accounts like Wario64 tweeting about the change.
The original press release grouped Super Mario World alongside Shrek and Minions, which are known to be shorthand for Shrek 5 and Minions 3, respectively. This suggests that Super Mario World might not be the final title for the Mario sequel but rather a placeholder or a thematic descriptor. Just as Shrek 5 isn't titled simply Shrek, and Minions 3 isn't just Minions, the same logic could apply to the Mario franchise.
However, Super Mario World as a potential title is intriguing and specific enough to warrant consideration. It harks back to a beloved game in the Mario series, which could resonate well with fans and signal a thematic direction for the sequel.
