Lenovo's Legion Go S: The First Third-Party SteamOS Handheld
Lenovo has unveiled the Legion Go S, a groundbreaking handheld gaming PC, marking the first third-party device to ship with Valve's SteamOS. This collaboration expands SteamOS beyond its original home on the Steam Deck.
The Legion Go S, priced at $499, will launch in May 2025 with a 16GB RAM/512GB storage configuration. This SteamOS version offers a streamlined, console-like experience, leveraging the advantages of a Linux-based OS optimized for handheld gaming, unlike the Windows-based competitors such as the Asus ROG Ally X and MSI Claw 8 AI+. Valve has been actively working towards third-party SteamOS adoption for several years, and the Legion Go S represents a significant milestone.
Initially leaked, the Legion Go S's SteamOS variant was officially confirmed at CES 2025. Lenovo also announced the Legion Go 2, a higher-end model, but it will not initially launch with SteamOS. The Legion Go S's smaller, lighter form factor provides a compelling alternative to the original Legion Go.

Valve guarantees feature parity between the SteamOS version of the Legion Go S and the Steam Deck, ensuring identical software updates (excluding hardware-specific adjustments). A Windows 11 version will also be available, offering a more familiar operating system at a higher price point. Future SteamOS availability on the Legion Go 2 depends on the success of the Legion Go S.
Currently, Lenovo holds the exclusive partnership with Valve for a licensed SteamOS device. However, Valve's announcement of a public SteamOS beta for other handhelds in the coming months suggests broader accessibility is on the horizon.
