The surprise announcement of the development of Space Marine 3 sent ripples of excitement and concern through the Warhammer 40,000 community. Just six months after the release of Space Marine 2, publisher Focus Entertainment and developer Saber Interactive made the announcement in mid-March, sparking worries about the future support of the recently launched game.

In a reassuring blog post, both companies addressed these concerns head-on, emphasizing their commitment to continue supporting Space Marine 2. They clarified that the development of Space Marine 3 does not signal the end of Space Marine 2's lifecycle. "Space Marine 3 does not mean the end of Space Marine 2's development. Far from it. No teams are shifting over, no one is abandoning the game, and our plans to bring more awesome content to Space Marine 2 remain," the statement firmly stated.

The companies outlined their plans for Space Marine 2, confirming that the year one roadmap is still in place, with Patch 7 scheduled for release in mid-April. Excitingly, they also teased upcoming content, including a new class, new PvE operations, and new melee weapons. "Trust us, there are surprises even dataminers haven’t found out about :)" the statement playfully added, hinting at more to come.

The announcement of Space Marine 3 was described as the beginning of a new project that is still years away from release. The developers expressed gratitude for the community's enthusiasm and reiterated their dedication to delivering more content for Space Marine 2.

The big reveal of a new class has sparked speculation among fans, with many guessing it could be the Apothecary, akin to a medic class within the Space Marines. However, there's also hope it might be the Librarian, introducing warp-powered space magic to the game. As for the new melee weapon, fans have expressed a desire to see the axe featured in Secret Level's Warhammer 40,000 animated episode, a wish so strong that modders have already brought it into the game.

The announcement of Space Marine 3 aligns with the success of Space Marine 2. In an interview with IGN following the game's launch, Saber Interactive's Chief Creative Officer Tim Willits mentioned the potential for story DLC and hinted at ideas already being considered for Space Marine 3. He suggested that the narrative of Space Marine 2 sets the stage for a continuation, with IGN reporting on the likely enemy faction to be featured in the sequel.

This news reassures fans that both Space Marine 2 and the upcoming Space Marine 3 are in good hands, with a clear vision for the future of the franchise.
