Helldivers 2 is set to launch on Xbox Series X and S next month in a surprising move that sees Sony publishing a title on its rival console platform.
Arrowhead's explosive cooperative third-person shooter arrives on Xbox on August 26, 2025, as confirmed during a livestream. Notably, this coincides with the same day Microsoft releases Gears of War: Reloaded on PlayStation 5.
In a post on Xbox Wire, Helldivers 2 Game Director Mikael Eriksson shared his thoughts on what this launch represents for the development team.
"We're aware players have been eager for this moment, and we're thrilled to welcome more Helldivers into our community," he stated. "We have extensive plans for the coming months and years—more players mean more stories we can create together! The battle for Super Earth is just getting started."
Cross-platform play has been confirmed across all systems, enabling PC, PlayStation, and Xbox users to join forces in the game.
Originally released in February 2024 for PC and PS5, Helldivers 2 became an unexpected breakout hit for Sony in the live service genre. It holds the title of PlayStation Studios' fastest-selling game ever, achieving a remarkable 12 million copies sold within its first 12 weeks.
Although Steam user numbers—publicly tracked by Valve—remain strong over a year after its record-breaking debut, the Xbox launch is expected to significantly expand the active player base.
Nonetheless, the arrival of Helldivers 2 on Xbox comes as a major surprise. Sony has historically avoided releasing PlayStation Studios titles on Xbox, prioritizing PlayStation console exclusivity along with growing support for PC releases. MLB The Show, developed by Sony's San Diego Studio and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, is one exception, arriving on Xbox under the MLB partnership. More recently, Sony also launched LEGO Horizon Adventures on Nintendo Switch, PS5, and PC.
It's evident that the rigid boundaries of console exclusivity are beginning to dissolve. Microsoft, having just announced significant cuts across its gaming division—impacting over 9,000 employees—is now fully engaged with PlayStation. Gears of War: Reloaded marks the iconic series' first appearance on a PlayStation console, Hellblade 2 arrives on PS5 in August, and Obsidian's The Outer Worlds 2 is scheduled to launch on Sony's platform in October.
