Simu Liu Claims Marvel Keeps Cast in the Dark Due to Holland and Ruffalo's Leaks

It's official: Shang-Chi is making a triumphant return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. During the thrilling Avengers: Doomsday livestream, it was announced that Simu Liu will reprise his role in the eagerly anticipated ensemble film. However, due to Marvel Studios' notorious secrecy regarding potential spoilers, Liu remained tight-lipped about his involvement, only hinting at his participation by mentioning his name on a chair alongside other MCU luminaries.

The Avengers: Doomsday cast reveal last month was dominated by veteran X-Men actors, confirming their significant presence in the film. Notable names include Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden. Grammer, who played Beast in the Fox X-Men franchise, made his MCU debut in The Marvels' post-credits scene. Stewart portrayed Charles Xavier/Professor X in the X-Men films and made a brief appearance in the MCU in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as a member of the Illuminati. McKellen, known for his role as Magneto, has yet to make his MCU debut, as have Cumming (Nightcrawler), Romijn (Mystique), and Marsden (Cyclops). This raises the intriguing question: is Avengers: Doomsday secretly an Avengers vs. X-Men movie?

Simu Liu shared his excitement about being part of the project on the Jennifer Hudson Show, stating, "I knew I was going to be involved in it to some capacity. But I didn't know who else they were announcing. They don't tell us anything. Tom Holland and Mark Ruffalo ruined it for all of us. Now, they don't tell us." Liu's comments refer to the well-known instances where Holland and Ruffalo inadvertently revealed plot details about the MCU's Spider-Man series and Avengers films, respectively. Since those incidents, Marvel has clamped down on information sharing to prevent further leaks.

Liu, who also starred as one of the Kens in Greta Gerwig's Barbie, expressed his awe at some of his co-stars. "I saw when Sir Ian and Sir Patrick were announced," he said during the interview. "These are two of the greatest actors to have ever walked the face of the Earth. That blew my mind a little bit."

Liu first captivated audiences as Shang-Chi in Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings in 2021. Although the character has yet to return to the screen, fans are eagerly awaiting more details about Avengers: Doomsday, set for release on May 1, 2026. While much about the film remains a mystery, the coming year is expected to shed more light on the project—spoilers or otherwise.
