Mastering Path of Exile 2's Expeditions: A Comprehensive Guide

Path of Exile 2 introduces four major endgame events: Delirium, Breaches, Rituals, and Expeditions. This guide focuses on Expeditions, a returning mechanic from a previous league, detailing its mechanics, rewards, and the strategic use of its passive skill tree.

Unveiling the Expedition Event

Expeditions are identified on the Atlas map by a light blue spiral icon. You can guarantee an Expedition encounter by using an Expedition Precursor Tablet in a completed Lost Tower slot. Upon entering a map containing an Expedition, locate the marked area and interact with one of four NPCs.

The core Expedition mechanic revolves around strategically placing Explosives near Markers to trigger events. A new UI element displays Explosives and their area of effect (AoE).

  • Runic Monsters: Detonating Explosives near Red Markers spawns these monsters. Larger markers yield larger monster packs, enhanced by Unearthed Remnants.
  • Unearthed Remnants: These relics provide beneficial or detrimental modifiers. For instance, increased monster elemental damage might be offset by increased item rarity from Excavated Chests.
  • Excavated Chests: Located near Black Markers with the spiral symbol, these chests contain valuable rewards: Artifacts, Logbooks, currencies, Waystones, and high-tier gear.

Avoid overlapping AoE circles for optimal farming. After placing Explosives, activate the Detonator. Runic Monsters, empowered by Remnants, will appear, initiating the event. If overwhelmed, retreat and return later; the event persists.

The Expedition Pinnacle Map: Conquering Olroth

Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests have a chance to drop Expedition Logbooks. Use these at Dannig's Hideout to access the Expedition Pinnacle Map – a significantly larger event with more Explosives.

This map features Olroth, a powerful boss (indicated by a skull on the minimap). Defeating Olroth is crucial for obtaining Expedition Passive Skill Tree points (2x points per victory).

Enhancing Expeditions with the Passive Skill Tree

The Expedition Passive Skill Tree, accessible via the Atlas Passive Skill Tree menu, enhances Expedition rewards and difficulty. It features eight Notable nodes and eight difficulty-increasing nodes for Logbooks (and Olroth).

Each Notable node requires defeating Olroth at an increased difficulty. Prioritize nodes offering significant reward boosts without excessive difficulty increases.

Notable Expedition Passive Effect Requirements
Extreme Archaeology Reduces Explosives to 1, but boosts radius by 150%, placement range by 100%, and reduces enemy Life by 20% N/A
Disturbed Rest 50% more Runic Monster Flags N/A
Detailed Records 50% more Logbooks, Logbooks always spawn with 3x Modifiers Disturbed Rest
Timed Detonations 50% more Artifacts, Detonation chains travel 50% faster N/A
Legendary Battles 50% more Rare monsters, 50% more Exotic Coinage Timed Detonations
Frail Treasures 3x more Excavated Chest Markers, but they disappear after 5 seconds N/A
Weight of History 35% boost to Remnant effects N/A
Unearthed Anomalies Remnants gain an additional Suffix and Prefix modifier Weight of History

Recommended Path: Focus on "Disturbed Rest," "Detailed Records," and "Timed Detonations" for substantial reward increases. Then consider "Weight of History," "Unearthed Anomalies," and "Legendary Battles" for further gains, accepting increased difficulty. Avoid "Extreme Archaeology" due to the significant reduction in Explosives.

Reap the Rewards: Artifacts, Coinage, and Logbooks

Expeditions primarily reward Artifacts, used to trade with specific vendors for Gear.

Reward Use Gear
Broken Circle Artifact Gwennen (Weapons) Weapons
Black Scythe Artifact Tujen (Belts and Jewelry) Belts & Jewelry
Order Artifact Rog (Armor) Armor
Sun Artifact Dannig (Used to acquire other Artifacts) Various
Exotic Coinage Refreshes vendor inventories N/A

Each Expedition features one vendor. Exotic Coinage refreshes any vendor's inventory. Expedition Logbooks, obtained from Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests, unlock Pinnacle Maps and the chance to fight Olroth for exceptional rewards and additional passive skill points. The higher the Logbook's level, the higher the chance of Olroth appearing and dropping superior rewards.
