Nintendo has rolled out a critical firmware update for its Switch console in anticipation of the upcoming Switch 2 launch.
The Version 20.0.0 update brings significant changes to the eight-year-old console, preparing it for the next-generation successor set to debut in June according to official patch notes.
The most notable addition is a new system transfer feature found in System Settings, enabling data migration from Switch to Switch 2 via local wireless connection.
For users who may lose access to their current Switch before obtaining Switch 2, Nintendo now provides a cloud-based transfer option that uploads system data to servers for later retrieval.
Important to note: this process triggers a full factory reset on the original Switch. Nintendo advises only using this method if you're certain about completing the transfer on your new Switch 2.
The gaming community has shown mixed reactions - some appreciate the flexibility to sell their old consoles early, while others express concerns about data security with the cloud transfer method.
The update also refreshes several user icons, including Donkey Kong's new design from upcoming Switch 2 exclusives like Donkey Kong Bananza and Mario Kart World.

New HOME menu icons for Virtual Game Cards and GameShare hint at future Switch 2 functionality, with the former acting as digital versions of physical game cards.
Key updates include:
Virtual Game Card: Digital purchases now appear as virtual game cards that can be shared among family group accounts and transferred between systems.
GameShare: A new feature allowing Switch 2 owners to share compatible games locally with other nearby Switch systems.
Security Enhancements: Added PIN protection for Virtual Game Card access and new online license verification options.
The update also streamlines save data transfers and officially deprecates the "Primary Console" terminology in favor of "Pass-enabled console."
With Switch 2 preorders already live at $449.99 since April 24, Nintendo warns that overwhelming demand may affect release date deliveries for U.S. customers.
