The Nintendo Switch 2 requires a day-one update to fully unlock major system capabilities, including backward compatibility with Nintendo Switch 1 games.
The new console is now available in regions where it's already June 5, 2025, and Nintendo has released its launch-day Switch 2 update for download.
To access a wide range of content, you'll need to install this update. It enables compatibility with original Switch games, online-only titles, Virtual Game Cards, and certain physical Switch 2 software that requires additional downloads via key cards.
Many Nintendo fans anticipated this requirement, and early users ahead of today's launch reported needing a significant system patch for full functionality.
Although most Switch 2 owners should encounter no issues downloading the update, those eager to start playing immediately should prepare for this necessary installation.
Why the day-one update? Nintendo was likely perfecting the Switch 2 firmware while manufacturing launch units several months ago.
Additionally, Nintendo maintained tight control over its console details, even as some units appeared early in the market. Releasing the system update only today helped limit early exposure of gameplay and system features.
It's still surprising, however, to see Nintendo's official patch notes explicitly state that the console can now... actually play games.
