Nintendo Responds to Switch 2 Leak Rumors

Summary

  • In a rare move, Nintendo has commented on Genki's Switch 2 leak that came out of CES 2025.
  • A company representative noted that Nintendo isn't an official participant in this year's CES, so none of the Switch 2 imagery emerging from the show can be considered official.

Nintendo has officially addressed the latest series of leaks concerning the Switch 2, which surfaced during CES 2025. The company emphasized that the circulating images are not official, marking a rare instance where Nintendo publicly comments on product leaks.

Since late 2024, leaks about the Switch 2 have been rampant, likely due to the console's reported entry into mass production around that time. One of the most recent leaks came from accessory maker Genki, who displayed a purported replica of the Switch successor at CES 2025 in Las Vegas. Images of this dummy device quickly spread across social media platforms.

In response to inquiries from the Sankei Shimbun, Nintendo clarified the situation. "It is not official," stated a company representative about the images and videos of Genki's Switch 2 replica. They further emphasized that Nintendo is not participating in CES 2025, indicating that any imagery from the show cannot be considered official promotional material.

Official or Not, Genki's Nintendo Switch 2 Replica Could Be Accurate

While Nintendo did not comment on the accuracy of Genki's replica, the dummy device might closely resemble the upcoming console. This belief stems from its consistency with other recent leaks and rumors. The replica appears slightly larger than the original Switch and includes an additional button labeled "C," positioned below the right Joy-Con's home button. The function of this "C" button remains unknown.

Genki CEO Eddie Tsai, while unable to provide details about the mysterious "C" button, shared other alleged features of the Switch 2. He claimed that the console's Joy-Cons will attach magnetically rather than using sliding rails and that these controllers could be used similarly to a mouse, a feature that several other sources have also mentioned.

Nintendo has previously announced plans to unveil the Switch successor within its fiscal year 2024, ending on March 31, 2025. With 80 days remaining, anticipation is high. The console is not expected to be available in stores until at least the second quarter of 2025. Rumors suggest that the Switch 2 might be priced around $399.
