All Playable Characters In NieR: Automata

The heart of NieR: Automata's story revolves around three key androids: 2B, 9S, and A2. As partners, 2B and 9S share significant screen time, offering unique gameplay experiences through their distinct combat styles, even when using the same plug-in chips across playthroughs. A2, the third playable character, adds another layer to the narrative and gameplay. While all three characters are available throughout the game, switching between them isn't always immediate.

How To Switch Characters In NieR: Automata

In your initial playthrough, character switching isn't an option at your discretion. The sequence of playthroughs dictates who you control:

• Playthrough 1 - 2B
• Playthrough 2 - 9S
• Playthrough 3 - 2B/9S/A2, with the narrative guiding when you switch between them.

Upon reaching one of the game's main endings, you unlock Chapter Select mode, which grants you the flexibility to choose your character. This mode allows you to revisit any of the game's 17 chapters. During these chapters, you may notice numbers on the right side of the screen, reflecting completed or pending side quests. If a character's icon shows numbers in a chapter, you can replay that chapter as that character.

However, certain chapters in the later stages, particularly in playthrough 3, are locked to specific characters. Through Chapter Select, you can switch characters at any time, but you'll need to navigate to a part of the story where the desired character was originally playable. Remember to save before transitioning to another chapter, as progress made in Chapter Select mode will carry over, enabling you to level up the shared levels of all three characters as you strive for the maximum level.
