Want to conquer the fearsome Quematrice in *Monster Hunter Wilds* without getting scorched and losing your meat? Don't worry, fellow hunter, we've got you covered. We'll dive into its weaknesses, strategic approaches, attacks to dodge, and how to not only defeat but also capture this formidable foe.
The Quematrice, a giant chicken-like beast reminiscent of the Cockatrice, fortunately breathes fire instead of petrifying its victims. As a mid-sized monster, most weapons are effective against it, but given its area-of-effect attacks, ranged weapons might be more comfortable for less confident hunters.
Key weaknesses include Water, with no resistances noted, and an immunity to Sonic Bombs. When it comes to its attacks, be wary of the tail strikes and sweeps, especially the heavy-hitting tail slam where the Quematrice raises its tail high before slamming it down. Dodge or block to avoid this. However, the real threat comes from its fire attacks. These not only cause immediate damage but can ignite you, causing ongoing health drain, and even set the ground ablaze.
The fire attacks have subtle cues. One involves a slight head rear and a roar before it ignites a flame from its tail. Another is a sweeping fire attack following a roar and a lift of its head and tail, affecting everything around it. It can also execute this during a charge, turning at the last moment to hurl fire at you. If you're at range, start moving back as soon as you see these moves to avoid damage.
Capturing the Quematrice requires the right tools: a Shock Trap and a Pitfall Trap, along with at least two Tranq Bombs. While you only need one trap, having a backup is crucial in any *Monster Hunter* game, in case the monster escapes or another interferes with your trap.
Once the Quematrice is weakened to the point of limping, or you notice the skull icon on the mini-map consistently appearing, it's time to set your trap. We suggest waiting until the monster moves to a new area after limping away, as this simplifies the process. Lay your trap, lure the Quematrice into it, and then throw two Tranq Bombs to successfully capture it.
