Tantalus Media, the studio behind acclaimed Nintendo remasters like The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD and Skyward Sword HD, has been confirmed as the developer of the upcoming Luigi's Mansion 2 HD for Nintendo Switch. The original Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, released on the Nintendo 3DS in 2013, saw Luigi tackling ghostly mansions to recover the fragments of the Dark Moon and thwart King Boo.
Nintendo unveiled the Switch remake last September during a Nintendo Direct and announced its June 27th release date this past March. While a teaser trailer and file size details surfaced earlier, the developer remained a secret until recently.
According to VGC, Tantalus Media's involvement is confirmed in the game's credits, taking the reins from the original developer, Next Level Games. Tantalus Media's portfolio also includes the Nintendo Switch port of Sonic Mania and the PC port of House of the Dead.
Luigi's Mansion 2 HD has received positive early reviews, praised as another high-quality Nintendo remaster, similar to Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. However, like Paper Mario, it experienced pre-order issues, with Walmart cancelling some orders.
Nintendo's practice of withholding developer information until close to launch is not unprecedented. The developer of the Super Mario RPG remake, ArtePiazza, was only revealed days before its release. Similarly, the developer of Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey remains undisclosed, suggesting a similar strategy may be employed for future titles.
