James Gunn, the head of DC Studios, is known for casting his friends in his films. Now, an actress from Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy franchise has confirmed discussions with Gunn about a potential role in the upcoming DC Universe (DCU).
The DCU aims to create a successful shared universe, learning from the missteps of the previous DC Extended Universe (DCEU). While the DCEU had some box office successes, it also faced inconsistencies and financial setbacks. Gunn, known for his work on the Guardians of the Galaxy films, hopes to avoid these issues and may bring some familiar faces to his new DC projects.
Pom Klementieff, who played Mantis in Guardians of the Galaxy, recently reiterated at San Antonio's Superhero Comic Con that she's spoken with Gunn about a specific DCU role. While she remained tight-lipped about the character, she confirmed Gunn has a role in mind for her.
Klementieff also shared her positive experience working with Gunn on Guardians of the Galaxy, expressing her excitement about joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and her appreciation for the opportunity. With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 concluding with a team restructuring, she remains open to reprising her role as Mantis in future projects.
Gunn himself later confirmed Klementieff's comments on Threads, clarifying that the role isn't in his upcoming Superman film. He confirmed conversations about a different, unspecified DC character.
Gunn's practice of casting familiar faces, including his brother and wife, has drawn criticism. However, many filmmakers work with similar actors, and this practice isn't inherently problematic. Ultimately, Klementieff's suitability for the role should be judged based on her performance, rather than preconceived notions.
Guardians of the Galaxy is streaming on Disney+.
