DC Studios chief James Gunn is setting the record straight: contrary to online speculation, the Waller TV series is actively moving forward.

The veteran filmmaker addressed a fan's question on Threads regarding rumors that the project was being retooled into a Checkmate series. Gunn's reply was a definitive, one-word "yes"—confirming the rumors were false.

When another user followed up to ask, "So Waller is still in development?" Gunn again responded with a simple "yes."

This firm confirmation is welcome news, especially after Gunn recently acknowledged the series had encountered creative challenges during its development. "Waller has frankly faced a couple of setbacks," he noted at a DC Studios press event in February alongside co-head Peter Safran.

Specific details on the series remain limited. Initially announced as part of the DCU slate in January 2023, Waller is a Peacemaker spinoff. It will follow the consequences of Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) after her daughter, Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks), reveals the existence of Task Force X. The 2023 industry strikes significantly impacted production, requiring rewrites to align with the updated DCU timeline and causing considerable delays.

The series is being developed by Watchmen writer Christal Henry and Doom Patrol creator Jeremy Carver. While public information is still scarce, Gunn's latest confirmation marks significant progress for the project, which fans hope to see debut next year. All eyes are now on its continued development.
