Warner Bros. and HBO have unveiled the first six actors set to portray iconic Hogwarts professors in the eagerly anticipated Harry Potter television series. This announcement follows months of speculation and excitement about the new adaptation of the beloved Wizarding World saga, which will revisit the adventures of Harry, Hermione, and Ron with fresh perspectives.
John Lithgow, known for his roles in Conclave and Dexter, has been confirmed to take on the role of Albus Dumbledore, a character he had previously hinted at playing. Joining him are Nick Frost, recognized from Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, who will embody the lovable giant Rubeus Hagrid, and Paapa Essiedu, acclaimed for his performances in I May Destroy You and Black Mirror, who will step into the shoes of the enigmatic Severus Snape.
The ensemble cast is completed by Janet McTeer, who will portray the stern yet fair Minerva McGonagall, Luke Thallon as the nervous Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse as the cantankerous caretaker Argus Filch. These actors bring a wealth of experience and talent to their roles, promising to breathe new life into these cherished characters.

Showrunner and executive producer Francesca Gardiner, along with director and executive producer Mark Mylod, expressed their enthusiasm about the cast, stating, “We’re delighted to have such extraordinary talent onboard, and we can’t wait to see them bring these beloved characters to new life.”
The roles of Dumbledore, Hagrid, and Snape are not only pivotal within the Harry Potter universe but are also iconic figures in broader pop culture. John Lithgow, in particular, acknowledged the significance of playing Dumbledore, sharing his thoughts with ScreenRant in February: “I just got the phone call up at the Sundance Film Festival for yet another film, and it was not an easy decision because it’s going to define me for the last chapter of my life, I’m afraid. But I’m very excited. Some wonderful people are turning their attention back to Harry Potter. That’s why it’s been such a hard decision. I’ll be about 87 years old at the wrap party, but I’ve said yes.”
While the Harry Potter series does not yet have a confirmed release date, production is expected to start soon. The series aims to explore Harry’s story in greater detail than was possible in the original films, offering fans a deeper dive into the magical world. Controversial author J.K. Rowling is involved in the show's development, adding another layer of anticipation and curiosity about how the series will unfold.
