How To Unlock Multiple Pets in Stardew Valley

When you begin a new character in Stardew Valley, you have the choice to adopt either a cat or a dog to accompany you on your farming journey. Initially, the game limited players to just one pet per save file, but the 1.6 update changed that, allowing for multiple pets to join your farm family.

To unlock this feature, you first need to maximize your friendship level with your initial pet. This involves providing them with a full bowl of water daily using your Watering Can, except on rainy or snowy days when the bowl fills naturally. Additionally, you should pet them once a day, which you'll know you've done when a heart bubble appears above their head. You can monitor your pet's friendship level in the "Animals" tab of your pause menu.

Once the friendship meter is full, you'll receive a notification from Marnie via mail about the opportunity to adopt additional pets available at her shop, located just south of your farm. If you've managed to avoid adopting a pet in your first year, Marnie will send the notice at the start of Year 2.

How To Adopt Multiple Pets in Stardew Valley

After receiving Marnie's notification, visit her shop during her open hours, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, except on Mondays and Tuesdays. Upon speaking with Marnie at the counter, select the "Adopt Pets" option from the menu. You'll be presented with a list of 12 available Pet Licenses, which include various types of dogs, cats, and turtles. Each license comes with a cost, so ensure you have enough gold before you head over.

How To Get Supplies for Pets in Stardew Valley

After choosing your new furry or scaly friends, head over to Robin’s carpentry shop in the northern part of Pelican Town to purchase Pet Bowls for each pet. These bowls not only provide water but also serve as their designated "home," ensuring their friendship meter doesn't drop. Neglecting the bowls for too long can lead to your pets running away, so it's crucial to keep them filled.

Pet Bowls are available in Robin’s "Construct Farm Buildings" menu, costing 5,000g and requiring 25 x Hardwood, which can be obtained using a Copper Axe or better. It's advisable to acquire these bowls before adopting new pets to prevent any loss of friendship points.
