The buzz around a potential Final Fantasy 9 remake has surged once again, thanks to Square Enix's launch of an official 25th Anniversary website dedicated to the beloved game. The site, available in Japanese, marks the game's original release date on July 7, 2000, and celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2025. The website hints at a variety of commemorative projects, including merchandise and collaborations, which has sparked renewed speculation about a long-awaited remake.

The timing of the website's launch has not gone unnoticed by fans, especially with Nintendo's upcoming Switch 2-focused Direct scheduled for April 2. Many are hopeful that Square Enix might use this platform to announce the Final Fantasy 9 remake for the new console. Although the website's mention of "various projects" is vague, it has fueled discussions and excitement among the fanbase.

Last year, Naoki 'Yoshi-P' Yoshida, the producer of Final Fantasy 14, shed some light on what a Final Fantasy 9 remake might entail. He highlighted the game's substantial content, suggesting that fitting everything into a single title could be challenging. Yoshi-P's comments drew comparisons to the approach taken with the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which is being released as a trilogy.

In early 2024, Yoshi-P further stirred interest by announcing Final Fantasy 9-themed bonuses for the Collector’s Edition and Digital Collector’s Edition of the Final Fantasy 14 expansion, Dawntrail. These include the Ark summon as a mount and a wind-up Princess Garnet minion, with pre-orders offering a wind-up Zidane minion. During PAX East, Yoshi-P playfully hinted at the significance of these references but kept the details under wraps.

Rumors of a Final Fantasy 9 remake have persisted since a 2021 Nvidia leak, which included the title among other unannounced Square Enix games. While several games from the leak have since been released or announced, such as the Chrono Cross remaster, Kingdom Hearts 4, and the Final Fantasy 7 remake for PC, the Final Fantasy 9 remake and Final Fantasy Tactics remain unconfirmed. Additionally, a Final Fantasy 9 animated series was reported to be in development in June 2021, but no further updates have surfaced since then.
