David Fincher and Brad Pitt are set to collaborate once again, this time to bring to life a sequel to Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. According to The Playlist, this unexpected project is slated for Netflix, reinforcing Fincher's ongoing partnership with the streaming platform. The sequel, which remains untitled, will see Pitt reprising his role as the stuntman, Cliff Booth.

The screenplay for this sequel originated from Tarantino's The Movie Critic, a project initially intended to be his final film before its cancellation last year. However, Tarantino's passion for the story led him to entrust it to Fincher. The Playlist reports that Netflix has acquired the script for $20 million, with a hefty budget of $200 million set aside for production, which is scheduled to begin in California in July.

While no additional casting has been confirmed, it's noted that Leonardo DiCaprio will not return as Rick Dalton. Both Fincher and Pitt are fully committed to this project, setting aside other endeavors to focus on this sequel. Deadline has also confirmed the development of this sequel, noting that Pitt received Tarantino's approval to share the script with Fincher.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, released in 2019, has been celebrated as a significant achievement in Tarantino's filmography. The sequel faces the challenge of living up to its predecessor, which concluded with a definitive and impactful ending. However, the universe of the original film has been further explored in Tarantino's 2021 novelization, which delves deeper into the 1960s California setting and sheds light on Cliff Booth's mysterious past, including the question of whether he killed his wife.

As anticipation builds for the sequel, fans can revisit Tarantino's thoughts on Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and its place among his other works. Our original review of the film awarded it a 7.8 out of 10, reflecting its strong reception.
