Channing Tatum's much-anticipated but ultimately canceled Gambit movie was set to bring a unique twist to the superhero genre, aiming for a '30s screwball romantic comedy vibe within the superhero world. Lizzy Caplan, who was set to star alongside Tatum, shared insights into the project during an interview with Business Insider, describing it as having "a really cool idea."

Tatum's journey to portray the fan-favorite X-Men character, Gambit, has been fraught with challenges. Despite his efforts, the project was shelved following the 2019 Disney-Fox merger, leaving Tatum feeling "traumatized" and uncertain about ever bringing the card-carrying mutant to life. Caplan, who was confirmed as the female lead in the Gambit movie as early as 2017, revealed that they had advanced quite far into the production process. "We got down the road, we were gonna shoot it," Caplan recounted, mentioning that they even had a start date planned.

In 2018, Simon Kinberg, the producer of the Gambit movie, shared with IGN that the film would adopt a "romantic or sex comedy vibe," reflecting Gambit's personality as a hustler and a womanizer. This approach was echoed by Caplan in her recent interview, where she elaborated on the intended tone: "They wanted to do, like, a '30s kind of screwball romantic comedy set in that world, which would have been really fun."

As for the future of Tatum and Gambit, Marvel Studios has not yet provided any definitive plans, although they have confirmed the integration of the X-Men into the MCU. The excitement surrounding Gambit was further fueled last August when Ryan Reynolds, the star of Deadpool, tweeted a high-quality version of a scene from Deadpool & Wolverine, sparking intense speculation among fans about what might be next for the beloved character.
